Manish Mitra is one of the most well known theatre directors of India. He is believed to have developed a new theatre language and actor’s training methodology sourcing inspiration from the different South Asian performing arts both traditional and folk. Manish has done extensive research work on the Folk Culture of the country and also on the NATYASHASTRA under Vachaspati Dr.K.G.Paulose,
Ex Vice Chancellor of KALAMANDALAM UNIVERSITY and also worked with PadmabhuShan K. N. Panikkar in designing to major Sanskrit plays.
Manish was tired with the cliché realistic, naturalistic theatre practice of his city in his student life and felt that the practice is not rooted in the ethnic tradition of the country. So he founded KASBA ARGHYA, his own theatre group in the year 1989 to develop a space for all kinds of innovative and Avant Grade practices.
Manish got a scholarship from the British Council in India in a Shakespeare workshop and studied in CSSD, University of London, London. It was then he chanced to see lots of Shakespeare’s plays in London.
Manish worked with Eugenio Barba and did an academic research in the Grotowski Institute in Poland. He travelled with his productions ‘Mahabharata, and 'Macbeth Badya’ widely across the globe. Manish directed an international production of Post Office, a Rabindranath Tagore play to commemorate the birthday of Janusz Korczak which was premiered in Warsaw. He did it with actors from India, USA, Germany and Poland and with the support from Adam
Mickiewicz Institute. His contributions on aesthetics of Sanskrit dramas and dramaturgy are considered significant by academicians
and practitioners. At present Manish has shifted from the Urban Theatre to a practise in the lap of nature, mostly villages and forests. He is pursuing a new concept in the name of Organic Theatre. Manish Mitra was invited to direct a new play for Mysore based Theatre Organisation Samathentho on their golden jubilee and the play, he directed viz. Jeevayana: Ondu Sthri Sambhrama was highly applauded for his sensibilities on women issues. Manish has been invited to teach in the drama department of the Krakow University, Poland, Theatre Academy Mumbai, NSD Bengaluru, and many other Universities.
